Designing One (Single) Pipe Hydronic Systems
Date: April 25th, 2023
Speaker: Jim O'Donnell
Description: With the upcoming refrigerant change out and its affect on variable refrigerant flow (VRF) and split systems, will hydronic systems make a comeback? One of the drawbacks of two and four pipe systems has been its first cost as well as it’s time-consuming design process. But have you considered one (or single) pipe hydronic systems? Not just for traditional cooling and heating but also for water source heat pumps. Single pipe systems are more energy efficient and will dramatically lower your first costs. In addition, equipment manufacturers have made these systems easier to implement for new construction and renovation projects.
Review the Basics of Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHP)
Date: March 7th, 2023
Speaker: Jim O'Donnell
Description: For over 50 years, water source heat pumps have been a staple of the HVAC industry. Their low first cost, high energy efficiency, ease of use, and flexibility often make them the best choice when compared to other systems. WSHP systems are also seeing a resurgence as the world transitions to ‘electrification’ or ‘decarbonization’ that will reduce the use of fossil fuels for heating. Furthermore, additional interest has occurred due to the introduction of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that offers tax credits of up to 30-50% for qualifying geothermal residential and commercial installations.
Cold Climate Airside Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Date: January 24th, 2023
Speaker: Jim O'Donnell
Description: In the HVAC industry, the United States is rapidly moving towards the elimination of using fossil fuels for heating. This ‘electrification or ‘decarbonization’ means that some heating requirements will have to be met by reverse cycle heat pump systems. For years ‘airside’ heat pumps have been available but were traditionally only installed in warmer climates because of their wintertime heating output limitations. However, manufactures are introducing superior ‘cold climate’ ASHP’s for all types of applications by improving their controls and using variable speed compressors. Applied packaged rooftops with their pre-engineered design, manufacturing, and controls; as well as their flexibility, are perfectly suited for cold climate ASHP’s.
Indoor Air Quality Updates, Focusing on Air Ionization
Date: November 8th, 2022
Speaker: Larry Bettello
Description: The concern and knowledge of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has gradually increased since ASHRAE standard 62.1 was introduced in the 1970’s. Providing IAQ that is acceptable to human occupants and minimizes adverse health effects once again came to the forefront with the recent COVID-19 pandemic. One of the technologies that has been utilized for years to improve IAQ is air ionization systems. These systems saw a large increase in their use in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in residential, commercial, transportation, and healthcare applications.
Using Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation to Improve Indoor Air Quality
Date: October 11th, 2022
Speaker: Dean Saputa
Description: For many decades UVGI (also known as UV-C) has been utilized in HVAC systems to reduce energy use, improve heat transfer, and to improve IAQ by disinfecting airstreams. Traditionally these systems were primarily used in the healthcare and the food production industry. However, due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and because of their ability to mitigate disease transmission, UV-C light systems have seen a very large increase in their use in educational, commercial, and government buildings, as well as in residences.
Technology Updates for Applied Rooftop Units
Date: June 7th, 2022
Speaker: Jim O’Donnell
Description: The use of packaged rooftop units (RTU’s) continues to increase in the construction industry. Most of these gains have been made with APPLIED RTU’s that can satisfy a constantly increasing variety of applications. As an example, in the healthcare field, applied rooftop units have improved their thermal comfort control with the use of sophisticated controls and variable speed compressors and fans. In addition, updates to IAQ codes and minimum energy efficiency standards have forced these manufacturers to upgrade their products with additional innovative features.
HVAC Design for Warehouses and Other Large Open Spaces
Date: April 26th, 2022
Speaker: Shawn Manisto of Ruppair
Description: The increase in online shopping has created a boom in the construction of warehouses all around the country. This uptick is not just for the retail sector— it has also occurred in the pharmaceutical industry, which often has more stringent environmental requirements. Providing proper air circulation as well as even heating and cooling can be a challenge, due to large open spaces, high ceilings, tall rows of product storage, and the opening and closing of dock doors. Further complicating matters, there are many types of HVAC equipment that can be utilized, from simple unit heaters to large air rotation units, from large ceiling fans to standardized products.
Utilizing Radiant Cooling Ceiling Solutions in Commercial Buildings
Date: March 22nd, 2022
Speaker: Michael Matzura of Zehnder Rittling
Description: The benefits of using radiant heat has been well known for many years. Radiant heating creates a quiet, comfortable, and energy-efficient solution with minimal obtrusiveness to the space. But did you know the same principle can be applied with radiant cooling panels? In this instance, the ‘cold’ ceiling panel will absorb heat and energy from the space without causing any uncomfortable drafts or airflow. Similar to radiant heating, radiant cooling can be utilized in many building types, from warehouses, to sports hall, hospitals—even schools and offices
